Ingredients
Scale
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
- 4 hamburger buns
- 4 slices of cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded lettuce
- 1 large tomato, sliced
- 1/2 cup honey mustard sauce
Instructions
- Marinate the Chicken: Place the chicken breasts in a large bowl and pour the buttermilk over them. Cover with plastic wrap and marinate in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, or up to overnight.
- Prepare the Coating: In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using).
- Dredge the Chicken: Remove the chicken from the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off. Dredge each piece in the flour mixture, pressing down to ensure a good coating. Shake off excess flour and set aside.
- Heat the Oil: In a large skillet, pour enough vegetable oil to cover the bottom by about 1/4 inch. Heat over medium-high until shimmering. Test with a pinch of flour; if it sizzles, the oil is ready.
- Fry the Chicken: Carefully place the coated chicken in the hot oil, frying in batches if necessary. Cook for 5-7 minutes on each side until golden brown and cooked through (internal temperature should reach 165°F).
- Drain the Chicken: Transfer the cooked chicken to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
- Toast the Buns: While the chicken drains, toast the hamburger buns until golden brown.
- Add Cheese: Place a slice of cheddar cheese on each piece of hot chicken right after frying. Cover with a lid for a minute to melt the cheese.
- Build the Sandwich: On the bottom half of each toasted bun, place a piece of chicken with melted cheese. Top with shredded lettuce, tomato slices, and drizzle with honey mustard sauce. Add the top half of the bun.
- Serve Immediately: Enjoy the sandwiches hot, paired with fries, coleslaw, or a green salad.
Notes
- For even cooking, pound thick chicken breasts to an even thickness before marinating.
- Maintain the oil temperature for a crispy coating; if too hot, the coating may burn before the chicken cooks through.
