Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef (or ground turkey)
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon mustard (yellow or Dijon)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 slices of thick-cut bread (like Texas toast or sourdough)
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 2 tablespoons butter, softened
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish, optional)
Instructions
- In a large skillet, heat a drizzle of olive oil over medium heat. Once hot, add the chopped onion and sauté for about 3-4 minutes until it becomes translucent.
- Add the minced garlic to the skillet and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent burning.
- Next, add the ground beef (or turkey) to the skillet. Use a wooden spoon to break it up as it cooks. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat if using beef.
- Once the meat is cooked through, reduce the heat to low and stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, salt, and pepper. Mix everything well until the meat is fully coated in the sauce.
- Let the mixture simmer on low heat for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- While the sloppy joe filling is simmering, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a small bowl, combine the softened butter and garlic powder. Mix until well combined.
- Spread the garlic butter mixture generously on one side of each slice of bread.
- Place the slices of bread, buttered side up, on a baking sheet. For extra crispiness, place them directly on the oven rack.
- Bake the bread in the preheated oven for about 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and crispy.
- Once the sloppy joe filling is ready and the garlic toast is toasted, take a slice of garlic toast and spoon a generous amount of the sloppy joe mixture onto it.
- Sprinkle a handful of shredded mozzarella cheese over the top of the sloppy joe filling.
- If desired, place another slice of garlic toast on top to create a sandwich, or serve it open-faced.
- Garnish with freshly chopped parsley if desired.
