These chipotle turkey burgers offer a healthy and flavorful twist on a classic favorite, perfect for summer barbecues or quick weeknight dinners. Packed with spices and topped with fresh ingredients, they are sure to impress!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 1 tablespoon chipotle chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (optional for binding)
  • 4 whole wheat burger buns
  • 4 slices of pepper jack cheese (optional)
  • 1 avocado, sliced
  • 1 cup lettuce, shredded
  • 1 tomato, sliced
  • 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
  • Chipotle mayo (store-bought or homemade)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground turkey with the chipotle chili powder, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, salt, black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Use your hands to mix thoroughly.
  2. Add the chopped cilantro and breadcrumbs (if using) to the mixture. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.
  3. Divide the mixture into four equal portions (about 4 ounces each) and shape into patties, making a slight indentation in the center of each.
  4. Preheat your grill or stovetop grill pan over medium-high heat, oiling the grates if using a grill.
  5. Place the turkey patties on the grill and cook for about 5-6 minutes on one side without moving them.
  6. Flip the patties carefully and add a slice of pepper jack cheese on each patty if desired. Close the grill lid to help the cheese melt.
  7. Cook for an additional 5-6 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C). Use a meat thermometer for accuracy.
  8. Remove the patties from the grill and let them rest for a few minutes.
  9. While the burgers are resting, slice the avocado, tomato, and red onion. Shred the lettuce just before serving.
  10. For homemade chipotle mayo, mix 1/2 cup of mayonnaise with 1-2 tablespoons of chipotle in adobo sauce in a small bowl.
  11. Toast the whole wheat burger buns on the grill for about 1-2 minutes until golden brown.
  12. Spread chipotle mayo on the bottom half of each bun.
  13. Place the turkey patty on top of the mayo-covered bun, adding melted pepper jack cheese if desired.
  14. Top with shredded lettuce, a slice of tomato, avocado slices, and red onion. Customize with additional toppings as desired.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, consider adding jalapeños or extra chipotle mayo.
  • The breadcrumbs are optional but can help bind the turkey mixture if it feels too wet.
  • Letting the burgers rest after cooking helps retain their juiciness.
