Ingredients
Scale
- 1 can (16.3 oz) refrigerated biscuits
- 1 lb breakfast sausage (spicy recommended)
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk (whole milk works best)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley (for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Open the can of refrigerated biscuits carefully, using a kitchen towel to cover your hand.
- Separate the biscuits and cut each one into quarters. Set aside in a large mixing bowl.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, add the breakfast sausage, breaking it up with a spatula as it cooks.
- Cook for about 5-7 minutes until browned and cooked through, stirring occasionally.
- Sprinkle the flour over the cooked sausage and stir to coat evenly.
- Gradually pour in the milk while stirring continuously until smooth and thickened (about 3-5 minutes).
- Add salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder, stirring well. Let it simmer for another minute or two.
- Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish and spread the quartered biscuits evenly across the bottom.
- Pour the sausage gravy mixture over the biscuits, spreading it out gently.
- If using, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs and pour them over the casserole, ensuring they seep into the layers.
- Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and the casserole is set.
- Check for doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center; it should come out clean.
- Remove from the oven and let cool for 5-10 minutes before cutting.
- Cut the casserole into squares (aim for 6-8 servings).
- Garnish with chopped fresh parsley and serve warm. Enjoy with a side of fresh fruit or a light salad.
Notes
- For added flavor, consider mixing in sautéed vegetables like bell peppers or spinach.
- You can substitute the breakfast sausage with turkey sausage or a vegetarian alternative for a lighter option.
