- Salt, to taste
- Pepper, to taste
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar (optional)
- Butter, for serving (optional)
- Chopped fresh herbs (like parsley or cilantro, for garnish, optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Rinse the sweet potatoes under cold water to remove any dirt. Scrub with a vegetable brush if necessary.
- Pat the sweet potatoes dry with a clean kitchen towel.
- Using a fork, prick each sweet potato several times to allow steam to escape.
- Rub the sweet potatoes with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. For a sweeter version, add cinnamon and brown sugar.
- Place the sweet potatoes on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or aluminum foil.
- Bake for 45 to 60 minutes, until tender and easily pierced with a fork.
- Insert a fork or knife into the thickest part; if it goes in easily, they are done. If not, bake for another 10-15 minutes.
- Carefully remove the sweet potatoes from the oven using oven mitts.
- Allow to cool for a few minutes before handling.
- Slice each sweet potato lengthwise down the center, allowing steam to escape.
- Add butter, salt, honey, or chopped fresh herbs as desired.
- Serve warm as a side dish or main course, pairing well with proteins or salads.
Notes
- For leftovers, cool completely before storing in an airtight container in the fridge for 3 to 5 days.
- Reheat in the microwave or oven at 350°F (175°C).
- Experiment with different seasonings like garlic powder, paprika, or chili powder for variety.
- For a different texture, mash the sweet potato flesh with butter and milk.
- For crispy sweet potato fries, cut into wedges, toss with olive oil and spices, and bake.
