Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450g) gnocchi (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound (450g) ground beef or Italian sausage
  • 1 can (14 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup (240ml) beef or vegetable broth
  • 1 cup (100g) shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup (50g) grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet or saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for about 5 minutes until translucent.
  2. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes, being careful not to burn it.
  3. Add the ground beef or Italian sausage, breaking it up with a wooden spoon. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Drain any excess fat if necessary. Stir in the crushed tomatoes and tomato paste, mixing well.
  5. Add the dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper to taste. Pour in the beef or vegetable broth and bring to a gentle simmer.
  6. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. If making homemade gnocchi, boil 2 pounds (900g) of potatoes in salted water until fork-tender, about 20-25 minutes. Drain and let cool slightly.
  8. Peel and mash the potatoes until smooth. In a large bowl, combine with 1 cup (125g) of all-purpose flour, 1 egg, and a pinch of salt. Mix until a dough forms.
  9. On a floured surface, roll the dough into long ropes about 1/2 inch thick and cut into 1-inch pieces. Use a fork to create ridges on one side.
  10. Place the shaped gnocchi on a floured baking sheet and set aside.
  11. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Carefully add the gnocchi and cook for about 2-3 minutes, or until they float to the surface.
  12. Using a slotted spoon, remove the gnocchi and transfer them directly into the Bolognese sauce. Gently stir to coat.
  13. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  14. Transfer the gnocchi and Bolognese sauce mixture into a baking dish. Top with shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheese.
  15. Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
  16. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired before serving.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground beef with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option.
  • Feel free to add vegetables like bell peppers or mushrooms to the Bolognese sauce for extra flavor and nutrition.
