Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound (450g) gnocchi (store-bought or homemade)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 pound (450g) ground beef or Italian sausage
- 1 can (14 ounces) crushed tomatoes
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup (240ml) beef or vegetable broth
- 1 cup (100g) shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup (50g) grated Parmesan cheese
- Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- In a large skillet or saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for about 5 minutes until translucent.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes, being careful not to burn it.
- Add the ground beef or Italian sausage, breaking it up with a wooden spoon. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Drain any excess fat if necessary. Stir in the crushed tomatoes and tomato paste, mixing well.
- Add the dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper to taste. Pour in the beef or vegetable broth and bring to a gentle simmer.
- Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- If making homemade gnocchi, boil 2 pounds (900g) of potatoes in salted water until fork-tender, about 20-25 minutes. Drain and let cool slightly.
- Peel and mash the potatoes until smooth. In a large bowl, combine with 1 cup (125g) of all-purpose flour, 1 egg, and a pinch of salt. Mix until a dough forms.
- On a floured surface, roll the dough into long ropes about 1/2 inch thick and cut into 1-inch pieces. Use a fork to create ridges on one side.
- Place the shaped gnocchi on a floured baking sheet and set aside.
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Carefully add the gnocchi and cook for about 2-3 minutes, or until they float to the surface.
- Using a slotted spoon, remove the gnocchi and transfer them directly into the Bolognese sauce. Gently stir to coat.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Transfer the gnocchi and Bolognese sauce mixture into a baking dish. Top with shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheese.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
- Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired before serving.
Notes
- You can substitute ground beef with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option.
- Feel free to add vegetables like bell peppers or mushrooms to the Bolognese sauce for extra flavor and nutrition.
