  • 1 box (15.25 oz) yellow cake mix
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks), melted
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, pour in the two cans of apple pie filling.
  3. Sprinkle the ground cinnamon over the apple filling and stir gently to combine.
  4. If using nuts, add the chopped pecans or walnuts to the apple mixture and fold in.
  5. In a separate bowl, pour in the box of yellow cake mix without preparing it according to package instructions.
  6. Stir the cake mix to break up any clumps.
  7. Pour the melted butter evenly over the dry cake mix, covering as much as possible.
  8. Using a fork or your fingers, gently mix the butter into the cake mix to create a crumbly texture.
  9. Spray a 9×13 inch baking dish lightly with non-stick cooking spray.
  10. Pour the apple filling mixture into the bottom of the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
  11. Sprinkle the crumbly cake mix evenly over the apple filling.
  12. If desired, sprinkle any leftover chopped nuts on top of the cake mix layer.
  13. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling.
  14. Remove from the oven and let cool for 10-15 minutes before serving.
  15. Serve warm, topped with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream if desired.

Notes
